Elderberry Syrup for Kids (2026): Dosage, Safety & When to Give It
Share
Every fall, my inbox fills up with the same question from moms: Is elderberry syrup safe for my kids? And does it actually work?
The short answer is yes to both — with some important caveats. Here's the complete guide, from one mom to another.
Quick answer: is elderberry syrup safe for kids?
Yes — elderberry syrup is safe for kids age 1 and up when it's a properly prepared syrup with the right dose. For babies under 1, only use a honey-free formulation (raw honey is unsafe for infants).
What is elderberry?
Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is the dark purple berry of the elder tree, used for centuries across Europe and North America as immune support. Modern research shows it's rich in antioxidants and compounds that appear to shorten the duration of colds and flu.
The key: raw elderberries are not safe — they must be cooked or properly prepared. Every reputable elderberry syrup does this for you.
Elderberry syrup for babies & infants (under 1 year)
Not recommended — primarily because most elderberry syrups contain raw honey, which is unsafe for infants under 12 months due to botulism risk.
If you need immune support for a baby under 1, look for a honey-free elderberry syrup formulation. Ours is available honey-free on request — contact us before ordering.
Elderberry syrup for toddlers (ages 1–2)
Safe with a honey-free formulation. Standard dose:
- Daily prevention: 1/2 tsp
- When sick: 1/2 tsp every 3 hours for 48 hours, then twice daily until better
Elderberry syrup for kids (ages 2+)
Standard syrup with raw honey is safe from age 2 up. Dose chart below.
Elderberry syrup dosage by age
| Age | Daily (prevention) | When sick (every 3 hrs) |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 1/2 tsp | 1/2 tsp |
| 3–5 | 1 tsp | 1 tsp |
| 6–12 | 1 Tbsp | 1 Tbsp |
| 13+ & adults | 1–2 Tbsp | 1 Tbsp |
How elderberry works
Elderberry doesn't kill viruses — it makes it harder for them to replicate in your body. Multiple clinical studies show that people who take elderberry at the first sign of illness recover 2–4 days faster. It's most effective when you catch a cold early.
When to give it
- Prevention (cold season): daily, October through March
- Acute (getting sick): at the first tickle, every 3 hours for 48 hours, then twice daily until better
What to look for on the label
- Real elderberries — not extract, not flavoring
- Raw honey (or a honey-free option for babies)
- No refined sugar — sugar suppresses immunity
- Small-batch — mass-produced elderberry syrup loses potency
- Refrigerated after opening — preservative-free means shorter shelf life, and that's a good sign
Homemade vs. store-bought
Making it yourself is beautiful — dried elderberries, water, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, raw honey. It takes an hour and a stovetop.
Store-bought (like ours) exists because a lot of us don't have time. Look for the checklist above, and you're set. Our Immune Support Elderberry Syrup ticks every box.
When NOT to use elderberry
- Under 1 year old (unless honey-free formulation)
- Auto-immune conditions (elderberry stimulates immune activity)
- Alongside immunosuppressant medication — check with your provider
