How to Support Your Body Through Every Phase of Your Cycle (Herbal Guide)

Your body isn't the same every day of the month — and it was never meant to be. Understanding your cycle isn't just about knowing when your period is coming. It's about knowing when to push, when to rest, when to build, and when to release.

Here's how to support each phase with the herbs, foods, and rituals that have been used for centuries.

The 4 phases of the menstrual cycle

  1. Menstrual (days 1–5): Bleeding. Rest phase. Deep introspection.
  2. Follicular (days 6–14): Energy building. Rising estrogen. Creative surge.
  3. Ovulatory (days 15–17): Peak energy. Social, magnetic, expressive.
  4. Luteal (days 18–28): Winding down. Rising progesterone. Nesting.

Phase 1 — Menstrual (Days 1–5)

Feels like: tired, tender, introspective. This is your body's built-in permission slip to slow down.

Herbs: Raspberry leaf (uterine tonic), ginger (cramp relief), cinnamon (warming), nettle (iron replenishment).

Foods: Warm, iron-rich, mineral-dense — bone broth, dark leafy greens, red meat, dates.

Ritual: Rest without guilt. Hot water bottle on the belly. Journal. Say no to plans.

Phase 2 — Follicular (Days 6–14)

Feels like: waking up. Fresh energy, curiosity, brain fog lifting.

Herbs: Adaptogens like ashwagandha and maca to fuel the energy build; nettle to keep iron up.

Foods: Fresh, sprouted, fermented — raw salads, sauerkraut, sprouted grains, seeds.

Ritual: Start new projects. Try new workouts. This is your creative launch phase.

Phase 3 — Ovulatory (Days 15–17)

Feels like: your most confident, magnetic self. Social. Peak energy.

Herbs: Cooling herbs like mint and hibiscus; light stimulants like green tea.

Foods: Bright, hydrating, cooling — fruits, salads, cold-pressed juices.

Ritual: The important meeting. The date. The public speaking. Say yes to visibility.

Phase 4 — Luteal (Days 18–28)

Feels like: nesting, sensitive, easily irritated as PMS approaches. Body wants to slow down.

Herbs: Chaste tree (vitex) for PMS support, passionflower for anxiety, chamomile for sleep, magnesium for cramps and mood.

Foods: Warm, root-vegetable, complex-carb heavy — sweet potato, squash, whole grains. Dark chocolate is medicinal here.

Ritual: Finish projects, don't start new ones. Early bedtimes. Boundaries. This is not the phase to push.

Herbs to avoid during pregnancy or TTC

If you're trying to conceive or could be pregnant, skip: chaste tree (vitex), pennyroyal, blue cohosh, black cohosh, mugwort, and high-dose parsley. When in doubt, talk to a qualified herbalist or your provider.

Sample daily ritual

Morning: Warm water with lemon + a phase-appropriate herbal tea.
Midday: Adaptogen in your coffee or smoothie (phases 1–2) OR fresh, cooling juice (phase 3).
Evening: Calming tea 45 minutes before bed. Journal one line about how your body felt today.

You don't need to do all of this. Pick one thing. Start there.

Frequently asked questions

What if my cycle is irregular?
Track for 3 months first. Even irregular cycles have patterns. Vitex (chaste tree) is the most-studied herb for cycle regulation — but give it 3–6 months.

I'm on hormonal birth control — does this still apply?
Hormonal BC overrides your natural cycle. Most of this guide won't apply. Some seed-cycling and adaptogen practices still help.

What about perimenopause?
Different guide, similar wisdom. Adaptogens, cooling herbs, and consistent rituals become even more important. Coming soon.
